The main steps of one rak'ah, and how a prayer ends.
Stand facing the Kaaba in Makkah, with the intention to pray.
Raise your hands and say Allahu akbar to start the prayer.
allāhu akbar
Standing, recite Surah Al-Fatiha, then another surah in the first two rak'ahs.
al-ḥamdu lillāhi rabbi l-ʿālamīn
Bend with your hands on your knees and say:
سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ
subḥāna rabbiya l-ʿaẓīm
Stand up straight and say:
سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ، رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ
samiʿa llāhu liman ḥamidah, rabbanā wa laka l-ḥamd
Put your forehead and nose on the ground and say, then sit and prostrate a second time:
سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى
subḥāna rabbiya l-aʿlā
After every two rak'ahs, and at the end, sit and recite the tashahhud.
at-taḥiyyātu lillāh
Turn your head to the right, then to the left, saying:
السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ
as-salāmu ʿalaykum wa raḥmatu llāh
Tip for parents: read one lesson together, then practise it, for example wudu before prayer.
